Walk One – Around Deptford and Greenwich

The Walk

I started the walk near Deptford Park at the junction of Grinstead Road and Evelyn Street.  From here I walked down Grinstead Road with the park on my right-hand side.   At the end of the road I followed it under the railway bridge to the junction of Surrey Canal Road and Trundleys Road.

From here I looked for looked for the Canal Approach.  I found it protected by gates so could not go any further.

So, after locating Canal Approach I took a walk through Folkestone Gardens following the left-hand path and exited through the railway arch between 57 and 58 Parkside Business Park.  This comes out onto the corner of Childers Street and Gosterwood Street.  Here I turned right into Childers street and walked down it to the junction with Abinger Grove.

At the end of Childers Street, I turned right into Arklow Road and followed it to the junction with Edward Street.  (This is where Deptford Green School used to be before being demolished and the school moving to new premises nearby).  I turned left into Edward Street and walked towards the Police station (on Amersham Vale).

From the Police Station, I continued down Edward Street until it joined with Deptford High Street, crossed the road and turned into Lamerton Street, then walked to the end, up two steps to join Creek Road, then continued down Creek Road to Greenwich.

Just past the junction of Creek Road and Deptford Church Street there are 2 supermarkets, a Sainsbury’s and a Tesco’s Local.  This was a good place to stock up on some water.

In Greenwich, I visited the Visitor Information Centre where I picked up a complete set of free TfL bus maps for London 2015 (there are 5 maps in total Central London, North-West London, North-East London, South-West London and South-East London).  I also picked up an old OS Alan Godfrey map for the low cost of £2.50.

My next stop on this walk was to view the new Millennium Quay Bridge.  A new footbridge over the mouth of Deptford Creek.

As I started the homeward leg of the walk I took a short side trip to a newly opened part of the Thames Path around Borthwick Street.

I then walked up Evelyn Street and Lower Road to Surrey Quays Over Ground Station.  Crossed over the road and stopped in at Tesco.  I was a bit tired, I finished the walk here.

  1. From Tesco, you can continue the walk by going along Redriff Road to the first swing bridge at Greenland Dock.  From there descend to the dock level and follow the right-hand path round the dock towards the Water Sports Centre.  Continue along Rope Street to South dock and cross the Lock, and walk along the Thames Path (towards Greenwich), until reaching Aragon Tower where the walk finishes.
  2. Map used for this walk the AA Street by Street London Extended Coverage Map Book 4th edition pages 112 and 113.
